The Substitute Teacher Incident: full monologue

It started with the seating chart.

Ben told her everyone switches seats on Fridays.

That was lie number one.

Then Maya said our teacher lets us listen to music during quizzes.

Lie number two.

I did not participate.

I would like that noted.

I laughed, but laughter is not legally participation.

Anyway, the substitute just nodded. She said, “Interesting.”

Then she opened the desk drawer and pulled out a folder.

A folder labeled “Period Three.”

Our teacher had left notes.

Detailed notes.

She knew Ben talks too much. She knew Maya hates sitting by the window. She even knew somebody would probably claim Friday was “free seating.”

Then she looked directly at us and said, “Should we continue?”

Nobody moved.

Best class behavior you have ever seen.

Honestly, I think she should come back tomorrow.

You are recounting to another student how your class tried to fool a substitute teacher.

Acting questions to explore

  • How much did you actually participate?
  • When do you realize the substitute has complete control?
  • Why are you secretly impressed by her?

Use these as rehearsal questions, not fixed answers. The point is to make a specific choice and stay responsive rather than copy a single “correct” performance.

How to memorize this monologue

  1. Recall the seating-chart claim, the music claim and the class reaction in order. Check each excuse against the text so the student’s changing explanations remain specific.
  2. Work the appearance of the folder as the reversal. Start from that moment, connect the teacher’s knowledge to the class’s response, and use a prompt only after an attempt.
  3. Run the whole account to a listener who already suspects the truth. Let the explanation become more careful as the evidence catches up with the speaker.

For a complete short-deadline routine, use How to Memorize a Monologue. For active-recall exercises, see How to Memorize Lines.

Why CueRoom helps: reading the speech is not the same as retrieving it. Put permitted text into CueRoom, hide your lines, prompt yourself when a phrase disappears, and return to the exact transition that keeps breaking.
